How to Avoid a Hangover

How to Avoid a Hangover

The fundamental premise: Don’t drink too much!

But if you are reading this article, you probably need more than that, right?

The Most Important Rule: Eat Before Drinking!

One of the most classic and effective ways to avoid a hangover is to eat well before and during the time alcohol is being consumed. Many times I find that even eating after the party is over also helps a lot.

If you drink on an empty stomach the alcohol will hit you faster, running the risk of getting drunk sooner than you thought, but you will also be acquiring a direct ticket to the world of hangover the next day.

A good meal is the key so that drinking does not affect you so much. Ideally, this meal should include carbohydrates and fats, as both help to slow alcohol absorption and protect our stomach from the unwanted effects.

To avoid a hangover is essential that you stay hydrated throughout the time you're drinking. Hydrate yourself with water, not alcohol.

One of the effects of alcohol on the body is to produce dehydration, that’s why the next day we die of thirst and headache.

One if the best practices is to alternate your drinks with a glass of water. You may also consider drinking one or two glasses of water before you go to sleep to help your body into better recovery.

Drinking slowly also helps you to drink less and drinking less reduces the chances of having a hangover.

As I said before, when the party is over it is advisable that you do not go to sleep with an empty stomach.

Taking for a headache before going to sleep is also very helpful.

The Secret Formula:

Now, my secret formula: Some people swear by sport drinks such as Gatorade, Powerade and so forth. However, if you already have a hangover the next day there’s nothing better than drinking a full bottle of Pedialite or any oral electrolyte solution.

You can drink 3 or 4 Gatorades and you will not get the effect of a Pedialite.

Soups are also very useful along with a full can of regular soda, and if you can have a good meal the next day, have it as soon as possible.

How to Keep Your Beer Fresh

These are some of the factors you should consider to make sure you enjoy your beer fresh.

Beer Oxidation and the Influence of high temperature

Aging and oxidation of beer are natural processes that generate changes in aroma, flavor and color rapidly.

The speed of oxidation depends critically on two key factors: the amount of oxygen dissolved in the beer and room temperature.

As with most chemical reactions, the speed in which beer oxidates increases exponentially when an increase in temperature occurs.

For this reason we should keep beer in a fresh environment, otherwise a drastic drop in the quality and life of the product will take place.

Even at low temperatures and controlled conditions, the exposure of beer to air will result in a quick loss of properties. That’s why you should never leave your beer open for a long period of time, even under refrigeration.

Effect of light on beer

Both sunlight and artificial fluorescent light affect the quality of beer irreversibly.

It is for this reason that most beers are stored in amber bottles. These bottles have the ability to filter out up to 85% of ultraviolet rays.

Never leave beer in the sun and always store it away from direct light.

It is necessary to take these simple steps, otherwise in a short time, ultraviolet rays will damage the fine and elegant aroma from the hops, creating an unpleasant smell that comes from a photochemical reaction that produces sulfur compounds.

The fluorescent artificial light also affects the beer.

The extent of the damage caused by illumination depends on the distance and the power of the light source.

When beer is refrigerated, it should be stored as far as possible from the light source.

Freezing beer

Beer should be consumed cold enough, but not too much, because we may not appreciate all the distinctive features of each beer.

Sometimes business owners during warm seasons, lower the temperature of their computers for a faster cooling of the beer, which often leads to freezing.

Beer should never be frozen. The freezing temperature depends mainly on the alcohol content of the beer. Most beers will freeze at a temperature of about -3 ° C (26F).

The first thing that happens during the freezing process is that the fraction of water is the first one to go into a solid state. Then the concentration of alcohol in the liquid portion increases.

If too much ice is formed, the high concentration of alcohol in the liquid and other soluble components will lead to a precipitation of the compound (called dextrins), forming an insoluble pellet, which will not dissolve even if beer is defrosted.

This irreversible and natural physical phenomenon makes the beer cloudy. Although a beer like this will not look good, the aroma and flavor may remain unchanged. However, the body will be unbalanced and with little foam stability.

Aging

Once beer has been placed in the container (bottle, can or barrel), a process of inevitable aging will start, therefore the sooner it is consumed, the higher the quality and freshness.

Transport

During transport, beer will face the challenge of two of the previously named factors (light and high temperatures) with the additional element of physical agitation due to movement of the truck.

To ensure the product quality does not deteriorate during transport, certain basic rules should be followed: trucks should be in perfect mechanical condition; ideally the truck should be refrigerated and parked away from direct sunlight.

Do not transport beer along with strong-smelling products: onions, fish, paintings, wet wood, etc.  Strong odors can affect the taste of beer.

5 Health Benefits of Drinking Beer

It is true that drinking beer, or any alcoholic drink in excess, can lead to serious health problems. However, some studies show that beer, if consumed responsibly, can be as heart-healthy as wine. Here are some of its benefits for our body.

Heart Health

A European study found that a pint of beer a day reduces the risk of heart disease by 31%, by increasing high-density lipoprotein (known as "good cholesterol" ).

Diabetes

People with diabetes who drink beer moderately are less likely to have coronary heart disease and also less likely to develop type 2 diabetes.

Brain Health

Adults over 65 who drink 1-6 pints of beer a week, show lower risk of dementia than those adults of the same age who drink excessively or not drink at all.

Overall Health

People drinking beer in moderation tend to report fewer illnesses throughout their life, compared to people who drink excessively or doesn’t drink at all.

Bones

In the health section of Forbes magazine has been published that beer can help fight bone loss in young men and women, reconstructing and strengthening it.

New Clinical Research: Beer is Antioxidant and non fattening

Malaga, Spain: Yesterday experts explained about the beer benefits on cardiovascular risk, osteoporosis and obesity , as part of an educational campaign on the role of moderate consumption of this drink , which in turn , has a "very high" antioxidant capacity.

This was expressed by the Chairman of the Scientific Committee of the Spanish Society of Dietetics and Food Science ( SEDCA ), Jesús Román , and his co-author, Alejandro Sanz, from the Endocrinology Service and Nutrition at the Miguel Servet Hospital in Zaragoza, Spain.

The campaign was presented at the Press Association in Malaga, supported by the Spanish Society for the Study of Obesity ( Seedo ) and the Information Center for Beer and Health ( CICS )  and it is aimed to both, professionals and general public, who have distributed educational materials in the Endocrinology  Divisions of the  Spanish hospitals.

They educate about the urban myths that exist around beer and, specifically , the myth of the  "beer belly"', by sharing  several studies and  recent clinical research conducted  in Spain that not only deny but "prove otherwise".

The main problem has been what people consume along with beer, they stated.

They explained that fermented beverages are part of the Mediterranean Diet  and despite its English origin, beer is 5,000 years old in Spain .

Beer has a very high water content and it is made up of nutrients and minerals, such as phosphorus and magnesium, as well as vitamin B. As a result, experts have found that there is now  solid scientific basis to recommend it to patients.

Despite the growing problems of obesity in our population, "postitive perception has grown tremendously”. They have clarified that a beer contains between 75 and 100 calories and in  the case of beer without alcohol, only about 40 calories .

However, Sanz has stressed the importance of moderate consumption of beer. Which he  defined  as one or two beers (that contain alcohol) a day for women; and two or three for men.

For people who are on  a dietary treatment they  recommended to calm their thirst with a non-caloric beverage such as water or tea , and to use non-alcoholic beers instead .

A beer made with moon dust

Dogfish Head, a producer of high-quality beer , has a new beer of limited edition with an ingredient that is literally out of this world . The beer is called Celest -jewel -ale and is made with lunar dust.

But where can a brewery get moon dust?

The saying goes that "having the right friends is a treasure ," or in this case moon-dust .

The Delaware company partnered with ILC Dover, a company that manufactures special suits for NASA, so they could have access to lunar meteorites. They grounded the meteorites to turn them into fine powder and immersed the dust like tea bags in rich Oktoberfest malt.

These certified “moon jewels” are composed primarily of minerals and salts that contribute to the process of fermentation by yeast and deliver a subtle but complex and earthy taste  to this traditional German style beer.

You will not have to travel into space to test the original beer, but you would have to go to the Rehoboth Beach brewery in Delaware, where it will be available for a limited time only. So you must hurry.

To compensate for travel and as an extra touch every pint of Ale Celest Jewel is wrapped in a fabric of the same material that spacesuits are made, a thoughtful detail that completes the experience of tasting a beer from the moon.

Three People Survive a Shipwreck By Holding onto a Case Full of Beer

RIO DE JANEIRO:3  Brazilians were saved from drowning after a shipwreck off the coast a few miles from Rio De Janeiro by clinging to the top of an isothermal box full of beer, officials said.

The accident occurred on Tuesday in the southern coast of the state of Alagoas in Brazil , 2 miles from the coast, across to the municipality of Barra de São Miguel, as reported by the Air Support Center in the region.

The three castaways, two women and a man, held to the top of the case of beer, made of Styrofoam, and floated adrift  for a few hours according to various sources, until they were rescued by a helicopter from the militarized Police which was doing a routine patrol.

Two ships that were passing by, one of a fisherman, assisted in the rescue of the castaways, who did not need to be hospitalized because they didn't present severe injuries.

How to make beer cold fast

When people think about how to make beer cold fast, they usually grab a can and put it in the freezer, without knowing that it takes 25 MINUTES to get it cold with this method.

I am going to discuss several methods here, some which really blew my mind as I was doing research to write this article.

But whatever you do, never do this sacrilege:

I have always been a big fan on Mythbusters. If you are not familiar with the TV show, what they do is to take urban myths and put them to the test (scientifically).

That’s exactly what they did in an episode where they tested different methods on how to chill beer fast.

You can watch the episode here:
I recommend you to start at minute 5, that’s when the meat starts

Part 2:

To summarize, this is what they did:

The first method was to fire a liquid carbon dioxide (CO2) fire extinguisher to a beer can, and in a matter of 2 to 3 minutes they had beer at 37F.

A method that works but obviously not cost effective.

Then they made a comparison by putting a beer can in the following environments:

1-     Ice only
2-     Ice and Water
3-     Ice + water + salt
4-     Freezer
5-     In the fridge

And the winner was….

After putting the beer in those environments, this is how long it tool to achieve the desired temperature of 37 degrees F

Fridge: >40 minutes

Ice only: 30 minutes

Freezer: 25 Minutes

Ice and Water: 15 minutes

Ice + Water + Salt: 5 minutes

However, I have to clarify that they did not measure the temperature before 5 minutes.

I found sources stating that it only takes 3 minutes to get the beer cold with ice, salt and water.

We can talk about the science content of it, but I am not going to bore you with it, just know that such combination lowers the freezing point of the water.

Now let’s get know to the freaky stuff.

Ready for less than 3 minutes?  Watch this:

That method is hilarious. How can someone come up with that?

Well, you can definitively have your beer cold in 45 seconds. However, it has a disadvantage. If you need to cool a six pack, it will take you at least 6 minutes (counting the set up time) to cool the whole six pack.

That is why I still prefer the salt, water and ice method; as for larger amount of beer is faster and less labor intensive (ok, I am just lazy).

On the other hand, it seems some guys knew the trick and found a fancy way to make the same in Europe and call it the V-Tech Technology.

Watch it here:

Another Method: The Wet Paper Towel

I have found in several forums people swearing about this method to cool the beers down. It consists on wrapping the beer in a wet paper towel and place it in the freezer.  It seems to be practical and efficacious, however I have not found serious evidence about how long it takes to cool the beer with this method and to what temperature.

I am going to do a follow up post with my own testing of this method to see how long really takes to take a beer from room temperature to the ideal temp.

How to Keep Your Beer Cold

You can choose from all those methods the best way to make your beer cold, but now, how do you KEEP BEER COLD to the last sip?
